Gum treatment (also known as periodontal debridement) is the main treatment for gum disease.

What is Gum Disease?
Why should I be concerned?

“Approximately 94.5% of Malaysian adults experience gum health issues, with the prevalence rising to an alarming 96% among adults aged 35 to 44.

Even more concerning, 38.2% of Malaysian adults are affected by periodontitis, a serious form of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.”

OVERVIEW

WHAT IS PERIODONTITIS?

Periodontitis is a form of gum disease. It’s a bacteria infection that causes your  gums to bleed and swell. Eventually, it can damage the bone that supports your teeth, leading to wiggly teeth and tooth loss.

Periodontitis is more likely to happen as you age. It’s most common in people over 30. Still, it can affect anyone with poor oral hygiene. Some people are also more genetically prone to periodontitis than others.

WHEN TO SEE A PERIODONTIST (GUM SPECIALIST)?

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth also known as gum disease), and in the placement of dental implants.

Our Treatments

Scaling and Root Debridement (Deep Cleaning)

Periodontist will clean below the gum line, removing all bacteria as well as calculus buildup along the roots of your teeth. Rough spots on the roots are smoothed out where plaque has attached itself.

Surgical Gum Therapy

Minor gum surgery to access and clean deep areas affected by gum disease

Guided Bone regeneration

Gum surgery that allows placement of bone grafts & other biomaterials to encourage natural bone regrowth in areas damaged by gum disease.

Gum Grafting Surgery

Gum grafting is used to restore receding gums. It involves taking healthy gum tissue from another part of the mouth and attaching it to the area where the gums have receded.
This surgical procedure helps cover exposed tooth roots, preventing further oral health issues.

Management of Dental Implant Complications

Peri-Implant Disease is avoidable and treatable if detected early. Early diagnosis can help save an infected implant and regenerate lost bone and tissue.
Treatment typically involves surgical debridement, disinfection, bone and gum regeneration, antibiotics, deep cleaning.

Post Deep Cleaning Maintenance

After deep cleaning, we will schedule a follow-up gentle cleaning (once every 3-6 months)to help prevent bacteria buildup and supports gum healing.

FAQs about Periodontal Disease

A regular cleaning is usually sufficient for patients with good oral hygiene habits and no signs of gum disease. However, if a patient has gum disease such as mobile teeth or gum abscess, a deep cleaning may be necessary to remove the buildup of plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums and prevent further damage.

During your first visit, the periodontist usually reviews your complete medical and dental histories. It’s extremely important for the periodontist to know if you’re taking any medications or being treated for any condition that can affect periodontal care, such as heart disease, diabetes, or pregnancy.

Your periodontist will then examine your gums for any gum line recession, assess how your teeth come into contact with each other when biting, and check to see if any of your teeth are loose. Your periodontist will further evaluate the health of your gums by placing a small measuring instrument (called a probe) in the spaces between your teeth and gums (called periodontal pockets) to measure the depth of those spaces. X-rays may also be taken to observe the health of the bone below your gum line.

Before administering local anesthesia, we apply topical anesthetic gel to minimize discomfort. While you may still feel a brief ‘pinch’ when the injection is given, the anesthesia quickly takes effect, making both non-surgical and surgical procedures relatively pain-free.

After non-surgical treatments like root surface debridement, you might experience some temporary sensitivity. For surgical procedures, it’s common to have mild pain and swelling for 3 to 5 days, which can be effectively managed with the painkillers.

Every patient’s experience is unique, and our specialists and dentists will explain what to expect beforehand and closely monitor how you’re feeling throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort.
